Frequently Asked Questions

Where are CBS Bible studies held?

Most of our CBS classes are currently held in churches, but they are not affiliated with any individual church or denomination. Several CBS classes also offer online groups. See the Find a Class page for details on each class’s location and/or an online option.

When do CBS classes meet?

Community Bible Study Canada offers both daytime and evening classes on weekdays. See the Find a Class page for information on each location’s offerings.

Are there any fees to join?

The annual registration is $35 per adult member ($10 per child). At the class level, if someone is in need of help, others provide. We do not turn anyone away from studying the Word of God! All financial conversations are done in confidence with the Class Coordinators.

Are there programs for children or youth?

An important part of CBS is its NextGen programs: ministries to babies, preschoolers, homeschooled children, and youth. Several daytime classes provide NextGen Preschool programs (currently Newmarket and Toronto Downtown).

How did CBS get started?

Community Bible Study began in the US in 1974 as a direct result of the prayers of a group of faithful people seeking an in-depth Bible study. God has continued to bless this ministry through the years and in 1985 the first Canadian class began in Toronto. In 1992, Community Bible Study International was formed in an effort to fulfill many requests for Bible study materials in other languages and countries.

How is CBS Canada financed?

Community Bible Study Canada is a federal not-for-profit Canadian corporation. CBS is supported by its membership primarily through offerings. Members are given opportunities for free will offerings during the class year, but all giving is completely voluntary. Financial gifts are sent to CBS Canada and are essential for keeping the ministry operational. All offerings over $10 are eligible for a tax receipt. Registration fees are not eligible for a tax receipt.

All leaders are volunteers except for two part-time paid staff.

Who writes CBS material?

All CBS Canada lessons come from CBS United States, which is responsible for all the writing and editing. Selected qualified individuals write the lesson questions and application suggestions. Bible scholars are recruited to produce the commentary sections. CBS tries as much as possible to avoid denominational bias in its materials.

Can I start a CBS class in my area?

Yes! We would love to talk with you about starting a class near you. If there is no study available in your area, click here to contact us.
